$500,000 in grants awarded to 107 animal organizations for reducing barriers
Twenty-three national animal welfare organizations came together for the 2024 Open Arms Challenge. The goal of the Challenge was to encourage animal shelters, rescue organizations and organizations working to keep people and pets together to pilot new approaches that increase inclusivity for new adopters and volunteers, and provide a welcoming environment for all community members. In total, 107 organizations received a total of $500,000 in grant prizes.

In October of 2022, over 10,000 lost pets were reunited with their families thanks to the Return to Home Challenge. 17 national organizations came together to promote the Challenge that encouraged animal shelters and foster-based organizations to create a culture of return to home within their organization and community. A total of 140 organizations across the United States participated.

An unparalleled 16,665 dogs and cats found homes during the nation's largest free pet adoption event, sponsored by Maddie's Fund. This represents a 98% increase over last year's 8,432 adoptions for this two-day event. Maddie's Fund originally set aside $10 million to underwrite the adoptions managed by participating organizations this year, however, the total donation awarded to groups for qualifying adoptions this year was actually $13.3 million.

Maddie's Fund will hold its third annual Maddie's Matchmaker Adoptathon on June 9 and 10. Due to the success of previous Adoptathons, Maddie's Fund has decided to grow the event – both geographically and financially. This year, 14 shelters and rescue organizations from San Francisco County have been added to the roster. A total of 62 groups will hold adoptions in more than 80 locations throughout Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco Counties. In addition, Maddie's Fund has set aside $3 million for this year's Adoptathon to meet its goal of finding loving homes for 3,000 dogs and cats in all three participating counties.

Shelter animals in Nevada still play second fiddle when it comes time to choose a new pet, according to the findings of a recent telephone survey. Despite ongoing efforts to promote adoption of shelter animals, only 39% of the people surveyed had obtained one or more of their pets from a shelter or a rescue group. The rest were obtained from breeders, pet stores, friends, and family.
